지난 9월 23일에는 중앙대학교 컴퓨터 공학부에서 영어 인터뷰 특강이 있었습니다.
학부생 3학년생들에게 영어 인터뷰 전략에 대해 제가 핵심 전략을 간단하게 강연하였습니다. 그 후 컴퓨터 IT분야 석사 전공 및 컨설팅 경험이 많으신 에듀센트로 수석 컨설턴트 쿨롱 강사님께서 영어 인터뷰 전략에 대해 20분 동안 특강을 진행해 주셨습니다.
인터뷰 답변은 AREA와 STAR로 정리하면 좋습니다. Photo by Educentro 2015-09-23
답안을 영어로 만들어 줄줄 외우는 것은 그리 효율적이지 못합니다. 비슷한 질문이 약간 다르게 나왔을 때 응용을 못하고 당황하게 되는 경우가 많기 때문이지요.
따라서 질문이 사실, 의견을 묻는 경우라면 AREA, 질문이 상황 및 경험을 묻는 경우라면 STAR로 기억하고 답을 주면 암기 없이도 논리적으로 짧은 시간안에 답을 말할 수 있습니다.
AREA는 Answer - Reason - Evidence - Affirmation을 의미합니다.
즉 답을 먼저 주고, 이유와 근거를 제시하고 단언하는 표현 (즉 본인의 역량이 이 회사에 어떤 이득을 줄지)으로 정리하세요.

Why are you applying for this position?
A : I am applying to ABC Tech to be an network security expert.
R : At ABC Tech, I would like to explore effective network security tools and I’m ready to pursue related research.
E : I have been working on a new clouding security issue research and project since college.
A : I believe that my academic background in IT and hands-on expertise in programming will make a valuable contribution to your company, especially in the area of wireless and clouding system maintenance.
Why do you want to work for us? (reasons)
Answer: I’d like to work for this company because I share the same vision with this company.
Reasons: First of all, I share the same values with this company. Your company’s value in humanity is the basis of your strength in ~ industry.
Evidence: Your management philosophy represents my ultimate career goal which is to become a caring engineer who seek solutions to humanity’s problems.
Affirmation: I hope to realize my dream as well as continuing growth of this company.
반면 STAR는 경험담이나 상황 설명시 좋습니다. Situation - Task - Action - Result 의 순으로 답을 줍니다.
즉 상황설명과 내가 한 업무, 행동, 그 결과로 마무리 지으면 됩니다. 예를 볼까요?

Do you have a leadership experience?
Situation: In college, I joined a computer programming club and I was elected President in my third year.
Task: I had to organize an event to boost up the team spirit of the members.
Actions
Action 1: As a club leader, I organized a programming skills workshop
Action 2: I contacted professors and guest speakers who could provide mentorship for our members.
Action 3: The on-going workshop led to other fun events.
Results: The membership increased by 45% in one semester, and our club was voted as one of the most active, fun and informative clubs on campus.
